History

Meet the team

We are passionate about History because it brings the past to life and helps children understand the world around them. We love inspiring curiosity—encouraging pupils to ask questions, explore evidence, and make connections between the past and their own lives. Our interest in History has grown through discovering stories of migration, invasion, and cultural exchange, and exploring how ancient and modern societies have shaped today’s world. Visiting sites such as the Colosseum, Carcassonne, and local landmarks has deepened our understanding and helps us bring lessons to life. Our favourite moments are when pupils share and debate ideas, realising that History is not fixed but shaped by different perspectives.

Vision

At White Court, we believe that History should inspire curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning about the past. We want our children to become young historians — asking thoughtful questions, exploring evidence, and discovering how people and events have shaped the world we live in today.

Through a rich and engaging curriculum, pupils learn about significant people, places, and events from Britain and beyond. We bring History to life through storytelling, artefacts, educational visits, and memorable experiences that help children make meaningful connections between the past and the present.

Our teaching of History is guided by our school values of resilience, courage, responsibility, and compassion, helping children grow into thoughtful, respectful, and informed members of society.

Our History curriculum

We are teaching...

At White Court, our History curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and a love of learning about the past. Rooted in the National Curriculum, it provides pupils with rich, diverse experiences that help them understand different human societies and how they have developed over time. Pupils learn key historical knowledge and skills — including how to interpret evidence, ask meaningful questions, and form their own conclusions. Through this, they develop critical thinking, curiosity, and a deeper awareness of how the past influences the present, preparing them for continued learning in secondary school and beyond.

 We teach History by...

At White Court, History is taught progressively and in chronological order, covering topics from the Stone Age to WWII, including British, world, and local history. Six key threads — trade, civilisation, empires, migration and settlement, raiders and invaders, and achievements and legacy — run through each year to help pupils see the bigger picture and make connections across time.

Our curriculum develops both knowledge and disciplinary skills, including interpreting evidence, historical understanding, chronological awareness, and subject-specific vocabulary. Lessons follow a line of enquiry and use a wide range of resources, such as artefacts, maps, photographs, and videos, to bring History to life. Pupils also experience enrichment activities and many opportunities to develop oracy skills, encouraging them to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions.

The children learn...

By the end of Year 6, pupils have a clear understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present and can make connections between different periods and their own lives. They explore important topics, including Black History, within a broad and inclusive curriculum. History lessons are hands-on and engaging, helping pupils develop curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning. Our goal is for every child to enjoy History and leave school with knowledge and skills that will stay with them for life.
