Music

Meet the team

 I’m a keen musician and pianist with a passion for inspiring children through music. I love teaching young people to explore, create, and enjoy music, helping them build confidence and discover their own voices.Music is a big part of my life—I enjoy listening to a wide range of genres and attending concerts with my family. I’m dedicated to sharing that love of music with every child, making lessons engaging, fun, and inspiring.  Mrs Rodriguez

 I've always enjoyed Music and used to play the Keyboard from a young age, until I was about 18.  I have a Teaching Diploma on the Keyboard and have enjoyed teaching children how to play this instrument in the past.  I love teaching Music, making lessons interesting and inclusive for all children.  Mrs Debenham

Vision

 At White Court, we have  a broad and inspiring music curriculum, to nurture creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.

In line with the National Curriculum for Music, we aim for all pupils to:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music from a wide range of styles, cultures, and historical periods;
  • learn to sing, play instruments, and compose music both independently and collaboratively.
  • experience the excitement of performing and sharing music within our school and the wider community;
  • understand how music is created and communicated through its key elements and notation.

Music is a powerful way to nurture our core values. Children show resilience as they practise and persevere in mastering new skills; courage as they perform and share their creativity; responsibility as they contribute to ensembles and group performances; and compassion as they listen to, appreciate, and celebrate the music and traditions of others.

Our Music Curriculum

 What We Teach

At White Court, it is our intent to make music an inspiring and enjoyable experience for every child. We aim to nurture a lifelong love of music by encouraging creativity, confidence, and self-expression through a wide range of musical activities.

Using the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum as our framework—supported by the Essex Music Hub and Charanga—our curriculum offers  opportunities to perform, compose, and appreciate music from different genres, cultures, and periods. Wherever possible, music is linked to year group topics to create meaningful cross-curricular connections.

Our teaching develops pupils’ understanding of rhythm, beat, and pitch through singing and playing instruments. Children learn to listen with curiosity, use musical vocabulary confidently, and explore how music expresses feelings and tells stories. As they progress, pupils build the skills to perform, compose, and appraise music with increasing independence and critical awareness.

 How We Teach

At White Court, we make music inspiring and accessible for every child. Our curriculum builds skills, knowledge, and vocabulary year by year, with lessons designed to challenge all abilities and foster a love of music.

Every year group experiences a broad range of genres, with lessons designed to challenge all pupils, whatever their prior attainment or experience.

In classroom music, all children play tuned and untuned percussion, and from Year 3, pupils learn the recorder alongside music notation. Opportunities to perform are provided in class, assemblies, and for parents and the wider community. Additional musical learning is offered through peripatetic lessons in keyboard and guitar, with support available for pupils with PP funding.

Extra-curricular opportunities, such as choir, allow children to perform locally and nationally, including events like Young Voices at London’s O2. Whole-school singing and year group performances further develop confidence and performance skills.

Even our youngest learners in the Early Years enjoy exploring sounds, singing, and playing instruments, developing early confidence and musical curiosity.

The Children Learn

The impact of our music curriculum is closely monitored to ensure pupils make progress and develop confidence in performing, composing, and appraising music. and celebrate successes throughout the year.

We aim to raise the profile of music across White Court through classroom teaching, extra-curricular activities, and partnerships with Essex Music Services, including instrumental lessons, choir, and composition clubs. Parents are encouraged to engage with and celebrate their children’s musical achievements through the school website and performances.
